There is no lack of things to do in Philadelphia on the 4th of July. However it appears that today it will rain on most of them. So here is an Original Sarcasmo from July 2006 to help you pass the time in case your parade gets precipitated upon. Or you just feel like having an easy day off. Or, you are like me and work in retail, in which case your idea of a national holiday is when crazy people who are mad at you because their barbecue is moved indoors, descend like locusts , destroying everything in their path and frightening bag boys.

Everybody's Busy

Ciao, as they say in Italy. After a wonderful vacation we have returned to find that many Friends of the Corner have news to share.
Poppy & Feanor are packed up and ready to move into a new home. When they unpack all those boxes they can give them to Peccable & Trackerneil who are getting ready to do the same. Ptbvisiongrrl can lay claim to being a paid published author. Jenn from Tailspin Hoops announces the launch of a second SuperStar hoop, with part of the proceeds from the sale going to the Star C. Foster Writers Prize scholarship. Sarcas-sis made the cover of a professional journal with her graphic interpretation of the quaternary structure rearrangements available to proteins that use the morpheein model of allosteric regulation. (it's a picture of dice)

All Hail Sarcasmo

Today is her birthday. Her 35th birthday to be exact. What do you imagine she would think about officially hitting her mid thirties? I looked through her posts for a birthday one, but she never really mentions it. This post is about turning 33, and was written six months before her 33rd birthday. I know I linked to it last year on her birthday, but it is worth another read. Just for good measure, I offer you this Original Sarcasmo as well. It was written 5 days after her birthday in 2006. It is actually the second of two related posts. I particularly like the footnotes, which I found were often where her wit, and yes, her sarcasm, came out.
Last year on June 10, Sarcasmo's family and friends gathered in Rittenhouse Square to dedicate a plaque in her honor. The Square is a lovely place to find some shade on a day like today. We visited on Sunday . The park, which somehow seems way bigger once inside it, than it looks from the outside was full of people relaxing on benches. And lying on the grass. And those looking to entertain the crowd with their own particular talents. And a wedding party marched through. Sarcasmo liked to go there on such an afternoon to read and people watch. She called the park her back yard.

So here I was thinking that this would be a Monday Morning Madness edition of Sarcasmo's Corner, when I realized it was already Monday night. That's what happens when we have a three day weekend. * A note about Transformers. Sarcasmo loved them and had an OP which she shared with her sisters. Over the weekend I watched the current cartoon series with her nephew, Thor. He was entranced. She would have been thrilled.

I also am aware of a problem with the Sarcasmo Corner archives. I had the same issue on my blog and was able, with the help of some friends to get it corrected. I will get the Corner back to normal as well, one of these days soon, so we can post some more Original Sarcasmos.

Friday Follies

As I surf my merry way through the internet I collect links to post in a Friday Follies or a Monday Madness. Then I don't post them. After a while I delete them because they are old news. I have the same issue with coupons. I collect all the coupon inserts from the paper and put them in a pile where they sit while I ignore them. Eventually I get around to cutting out the ones I want , only to find they have expired. Somewhat of a pastern, dontcha think?

So I have decided to clear out my "follies link" folder and post all the links I have piled up. You know, before they expire and start smelling up the place.

TOTAL TIME WASTERS:

Monoface - There are 759,375 possible combinations. I may never get to those coupons.

TypeRacer - When I was in high school, they actually taught tping as a class. I never took it, and it shows. It probably isn't helpful that the whole time I am typing I am singing "Go TypeRacer-Go TypeRacer-Go TypeRacer Goooooooo" in my head.

Bubble Wrap Keyring - An inexhaustible source of bubble popping satisfaction.

Invincibility- Goes without saying, that on her quest for world domination, Sarcasmo would want a boost of invincibility now and then. Even it it is plastic and runs on batteries.

Tetris - If you don't recognize those plastic thingees boys and girls, they are ice cube trays. We used them in olden days to make ice. Look them up on Wikipedia.

My Fellow Earthlings

Happy Earth Day Tidings. I know it is also election day in the state of Pa. But Sarcamo's Corner chooses not to be political. It chooses to be green. The corner did it's bit for energy conservation last week. Due to the crash of the server that hosts this site we were not a blip on anyone's aggregator for three whole days. We went dark. It was a little scary. Because even though the nice people who answered the phone for technical support assured me that ALL my information was safe, and that my blog would be restored SHORTLY (three days ! three days!) I was pretty much resigned to the fact that the powers that be had singled me out for being a slothful blogger and were cutting me off.

Permanently.

And then it came back up.

Sarcasmo's Corner would like to say thank you to Chris, who emailed to see if everything was okay. And to PTBvisiongrrl who was concerned about our sudden "web page cannot be displayed status", but who was reassured by her level headed hubby who surmised that it was probably just a server thing. And so it was.

But just so you know. When I panic, and I did, I really want other people to panic with me. Not tell me that all is well, or the situation will be resolved shortly. I want PANIC! Heart thumping sweaty palm PANIC. Because misery loves company.

Did I mention it is Earth Day? Good. Whenever Earth Day approaches Sarcasdad & I cannot help but remember that Sarcasmo had an Earth Day decal on her bedroom door for years. She picked it up when the Philadelphia Earth Day celebration was just a small expo at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park. She was a young teenager. The sticker was still there when she was away at college. I am not sure exactly when we finally scraped it off.

I looked back through the archives for an Original Sarcamo that was about Earth Day. I didn't find one. But I did come across this one. The famous Sarcasmo versus the Squirrel Post. If you are interested there are several posts afterwards that continue the squirrel saga. No squirrels were physically harmed during the writing of these posts. There may ,however, have been some mental trauma. Enjoy!

Aaaah Spring. The time of year a young man's fancy turns to love, or baseball , depending on your quote of choice. Sarcasmos's fancy, as we all know, would be focused on the Philadelphia Film Festival, which starts this Thursday, April 3. In truth Sarcasmo would begin making plans for cinematic excursions well in advance. Usually the day after the end of the previous year's festival. Or so it seemed.

The release of the schedule of films and venues would b anxiously anticipated. Like Christmas morning. Once she had it in her hand, the agonizing began. So many movies, so little time. How much vacation time could she give over to the Film Festival ? How many movies could she manage to see ? How much sleep did she really need anyway, and who can't exist on a diet of movie popcorn and pretzel bites for a week? Oh, and next year, she was springing for the All-Access Film Badge so she could see everything.

She would confer with friends and make a plan on what to see when and where. Her success often depended upon the transportation gods smiling favorably upon her as she raced from one side of the city to the other to be in time to be seated.

Not Your Mother's Neil Diamond

In the summer of 2006, Sarcasmo invited me to see the movie Wordplay with her. I have quite a penchant for crossword puzzles and she, who loved word puzzles was oddly enough, just becoming enamoured of the pastime. We took in the flick at a theater known for showing independently produced and foreign films, as well as the more substantive first run movies. Like any theater we were subjected to previews before the main event. Because of the venue, the previews were for documentaries. No Fanta commercials or trivia sponsored by Coke. One preview was for a film chronicling the life of Leonard Cohen. Sarcasmo nearly jumped out of her seat. "We have to see that" "Sure", I said, who's Leonard Cohen?"

What followed was a conversation of her insisting that I must know who Leonard Cohen is, and me insisting that while he looked like somebody famous, but I wasn't sure who, I had never heard of the man. She finally concluded that while I did not know his name, I surely knew his body of work. Apparently I had been listening to his music forever, and just didn't know it. She tried to come up with a song on the spot. "He sang," she said "Kentucky Woman".

Now, while I may have had the edge over her on crossword puzzles, there were certain subjects in which I would defer to her superior knowledge. That was anything to do with books, anything to do with film, and anything to do with music. But when you're wrong, you're wrong.

Kentucky Woman, I assured her, was sung by Neil Diamond. No, she assured me, I was incorrect, but understandably so as Diamond and Cohen have such a similar sound they are often confused for each other. No, I assured her, I was correct because I had owned the song on vinyl at some point in my life and I didn't own any Leonard Cohen, who, I had never heard of.

So sure were we both in our assertions ( A trait we share. We both tend to think we are always right. ) that neither she, master of the Internet, nor I, who can Google with the best of them, even bothered to look it up.

A few days later,she relented. Neil Diamond might have sung it , but Leonard Cohen must have written it. This time we did look it up, and found that the lyrics were by Neil Diamond as well.

Still determined that I must be familiar with Leonard Cohen she put together a CD of his music for me to listen to. And I did. Even though I found it ,um, a challenge. I did recognize the song Hallelujah, which Cohen wrote, although I much prefer to hear the Jeff Buckley version.
And for the life of me, I have no idea how anyone confuses him with Neil Diamond. But that's just me.

This memory was prompted by an email from friend of Sarcasmo's Corner dbsmall. Knowing of Sarcasmo's affinity for Leonard Cohen he sends us this link. It analyses how Cohen's Hallelujah has crept into our consciousness. It is really interesting and worth a read whether you like Cohen or not. Should you be a fan, Cohen, newly inducted into the Rock and' Roll Hall of Fame, has announced a world tour.

I guess I should try listening to that CD again. Apparently, Sarcasmo was onto something.

When I replied to Unity I let him now that while I have never even finished a game of Mario Brothers , Sarcasmo has many friends who have done that and so much more. If anyone can answer his question leave a comment or email me and I will pass the information along.

Friend of the Corner ptbvisiongrrl , has scooped Good Morning America. A few weeks ago she sent along this link . She said "It's guerrilla improv in NYC. I SO think that this something Star would have loved to participate in.....". I think so too. Especially since it is a group activity. Not unlike a flash mob experience. Here is what Sarcasmo wrote about a pillow fight in Center City that was an organized mob event. She took pictures then, but vowed to participate should she get wind of another such happening. Anyway, one of the videos on the link was a story on GMA this morning. But you heard it here first. Or, you would have if I posted a little more frequently.

The whole Guerrilla thing reminds me of a Sarcasmo story. She was quite the champion of proper use of the English language. The incorrect placement of an apostrophe would make her cringe in despair. She and I had talked about putting out a coffee table book with photos of the glaring inaccuracies that people not only commit with the written word, but put up in public for all to see. (and in most cases, remain unrecognized by the general populace). We were going somewhere in Center City and she had to show me something. She took me past a gym, which at the time, had quite the rep as a place to have your sleek ,toned body see and be seen. Draped resplendently across the facade of the building, many feet tall and several times that as wide, in black bold letters on a white background for all to see was this banner.

She turned to me and said "Don't you just want to go in and ask them when the gorillas will be here?" We didn't. Mostly because we were leery of being tossed out on our smart -asses by some of those sleek toned bodies.

Speaking of sleek toned bodies, here is a link suggested by Friend of the Corner ,Cheryl. Just to be clear I was referring to the Robot when I said sleek toned body. That is not to say that Cheryl is not sleek and toned. She certainly may be. I have no idea. But anyway, Cheryl, sleek and toned or not thought that Gort would make a great big brother for Trotwood. Thanks for thinking of Trotwood Cheryl. He's doing just fine, bidding his time . Just, you know waiting. For that whole world domination thing. If called he will serve.

It comes as no surprise to friends of the Corner that Halloween was Sarcasmo's favorite holiday. The number of posts she did on the subject bears that out. I have no doubt that had she lived long enough to achieve her quest of world domination ( you don't question that it would have been, do you?) that the new world order would have included International observances to celebrate all that is zombified and vampirish.

Valentine's day, she didn't mention much. Every year on or around the 14th of February she posted about it in passing. Even though she gave the day such little acclaim, Sarcasmo was a closet romantic. Sure , in her closet it was probably shoved behind some books, some movies, and her suitcase always ready to be packed But it was there. I am reasonably sure that her Sarcasmic Calendar would have included a day where the gifting of chocolate is traditional. It was, after all, this Valentine's Day post by Sarcasmo that led to her debut as a scream queen. Possibly she would have renamed it though. The other day I read a post on Phillyist where it was touted as "Compulsory Love Day" , and I thought she would have liked that.

All Hail Sarcasmo- Cultural Icon

If you are one of Sarcasmo's faithful readers, then you know all about her quest for World Domination. It was a recurring theme. Even so she did not expect to realize omnipotence in one fell swoop, and would have gleefully celebrated each and every step along the way to achieving ultimate supremacy.

Sarcasmo's very good friend, and friend of Sarcasmo;s Corner, Peccable has developed and produced a game. Realpolitik ( working title "Project Spy" ) is:

" a game of lies, murder, and dirty tricks for 2-5 players "

Realpolitik is a card game. And one of the cards is this one:

Yep. Cultural Icon. She would have loved that !

I remember her telling me once that her friend Peccable was developing a game, and how awesome it was and how proud she was of him. She was sure it would be a hit, and she was rarely wrong about such things. She is, after all, the Cultural Icon.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have yet to play the game. ( Thanks to Peccable I did get to participate in one aspect of the production. When you get your copy check out the Cassadra card). I asked Trackerneil if he would write a review, but he recused himself on the grounds that he was too involved to be objective. Fair enough. How about anyone else who has participated in play testing, or in playing the finished project. The Corner would love to hear from you.

Monday Morning Madness

This time last year the Sarcas-family and many friends of Sarcasmo's Corner were up to our eye patches in plans for the pirate themed auction that was held in April. Our goal was to part ye landlubbers from some pieces of eight, to benefit the Star C. Foster Writers Prize at Sarcasmo's alma mater. We were pleased as punch with the results, due in no small part to the many generous donations of auction items we received. Buccaneers and landlubbers alike scored some bountiful treasures. Tickets to plays, comedy clubs, local eateries and events were some of the plunder.
I am hoping to hear from those who attended and and outbid their mates. Have you taken that dance lesson? Did you ever get a copy of the song ? How was dinner? Have you heard from that author/ We want to know. Tell me all about it in an email I can post, or leave the details in the comments. I am hoping to get in touch with everyone sooner or later.

In news that is totally unrelated to pirates, as least I'm pretty sure it is, Sarcasmo Jr. has a new job. It is very exciting. Due to the fact that Sarasmo Jr. wisely keeps the details of her professional life off the internet, I can only tell you that she is happy and we are happy for her. She will be moving to a new location and she has quite the impressive title! Wish her well.

How to Make the Most of Your Toolbar

A belated Happy New Year to one and all. Before we do anything else Sarcasmos Corner would like to aknowledge that our good friend Peccable had a birthday this weekend. Go wish him a happy. Go ahead. I'll wait.

(picture me with arms crossed, tapping my foot and humming the Jeopardy theme)

You're back.! Good. Now on with the show. So how was everyone's holiday? Show of hands, was Santa good to you? How many of you scored a WII under the tree? How about Blade Runner the Final Cut? That many ? My first thought when I heard that this had been released for the gift buying season was, "how many versions of this movie does the world need?" My second was that Sarcasmo might have put it on her Amazon wish list. It is, after all,

A- movie, and Sarasmo loved the moving pictures. On occasion I would find her at home on a Sunday afternoon,relaxing with a flick. Something light from a relatively unknown Japanese director about love, life and political upheaval , set in the frozen Siberian wastelands. It would be in the original French, but there would be subtitles. Or, it would be a movie with zombies. One never knew.

B-It is Blade Runner, a movie hat has achieved cult status. Some of us get it and some of us don't. I'll let you guess which camp I fall into.

C- It stars Harrison Ford. That alone would make it gift listable.

Another thing Sacasmo found entertaining were stick figures. Especially animated ones that met gruesome ends. I think she would have been delighted by this fellow. In Animator vs. Animation our stick figure protagonist resists the many ingenious attempt of the animator to help him meet his eraser. He defends himself with cunning, tenacity, and, the Windows toolbar. Enjoy!

Once, way back in November I had this wonderful vision of posting Christmasy themed Original Sarcasmos for the twelve days of Christmas. Which to the best of my knowledge are the twelve days preceeding Christmas Day. That may be totally wrong, but that's the way it was gonna go. Back in November. Fast forward to now. And I mean that literally. However did it get to be December 17th already? Still the seven days of Christmas are better than none. (Seven days! how can there only be seven days ti, Christmas ?)

You would be amazed to discover how many of Sarcasmo's December posts had absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. Well, maybe you wouldn't.

Friend of Sarcasmo's Corner, Peccable, has sent us some exciting news. You may recall that Peccable and Sarcasmo collaborated on a little project. An Interactive Fiction game entitled"Slouching Towards Bedlam." It won a few awards , was reviewed and applauded by those who know the genre, and is still generating discussion , more than 4 years aftere it's release. Today we can add another distinction to STB. It was referenced in a Doctoral Disssertaion by a candidate for a Ph.D in English at UC Santa Barbara.

To paraphrase Peccable, 'Sarcasmo would be tickled pink'. Indeed she would.

According to Peccable, the dissertation includes a detailed break-down of the interface he and Sarcasmo developed. I'll have to take his word on that for now. I have read the Abstract (where they get a mention) and checked out their inclusion in Works Cited, on page 373. The part in between that appears a bit technical and may take me a while to get through.

Friday After Turkey Day Follies

Sarcasmo's Corner hopes you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a very traditional one. The family gathered together and hung in the kitchen ( the smallest room in the house) until the turkey was done. Everyone pitched in with the cooking, the eating and the clean-up.

As I turned over under the covers this morning , I was well aware that hordes of people on cranberry sugar highs got up before the sun and stood in ridiculously long lines and are at this moment , done their Christmas shopping.

My holiday present "MO" involves a lot of pointing and clicking. In fact when I am done here I may just limber up the right hand index finger, and get started on my shopping list. Maybe I'll make a turkey sandwich first. I have heard that one shouldn't shop on an empty stomach.

Here a few places I may visit.

Tailspin Hoops - all decorated for the holidays. Friend of Sarcasmo's Corner, Jenn has some holiday themed hoops for sale, as well as her standard inventory, and her custom made option. Her catalog includes the Super Star in honor of our Sarcasmo. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each Super Star is donated to the Star C. Foster Scholarship Fund.

Signals - The online version of one of my favorite catalogues that comes in the mail. Particularly this page . Monopoly and books, books and Monopoly. That is about as good a pairing as chocolate and peanut butter.

Think Geek- This site was sure to be on Sarcasmo's Christmas wish list. Always up for a good pillow fight, she may have picked out these potential weapons.

In this past week I have discovered that Sarcasmo is not the only one with photographic mojo. Friend of Sarcasmo's Corner, Frank, took this picture at a Vote or Die Concert at Temple University. It now hangs at the entrance of the Liberty Science Center. in Jersey City New Jersey. Way to go Frank!

And not to be outdone, friend of the Corner, and contributor of many links, Cheryl has a photo featured in a 2008 calendar. In addition , one of her photos is being used in a classroom science textbook. How cool is that? The book is published by Sally Ride Science which gives rise to this Sarcasmo memory.

It was days after Sarcasmo's tenth birthday, that Sally Ride became the first American woman into outer space. While the rest of America cheered, Sarcasmo was mad , mad, mad. Seems Sally had beaten her to being the first woman in space. I don't think she ever fully forgave her for it either.

Happy Halloween to all. Truly, this was Sarcasmo's day to revel in all things spooky and bump in the night-y. She was so busy making with the scariness, that she never actually posted on October 31. Except for a one liner link several years back, and a short little paragraph about a local interest news story another time.

Gremlins going to mess up every cassette from London to Idaho

So - despite the fact that today I am in my most uncomfortable (and hence, most professional) shoes, am wearing a suit, and even (heavens) some make-up like a Proper Grown-Up Person - my inner child has complete and total control of my inner monolouge, which sounds very much like this:

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee!WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee!WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee!

And if one were to slow that down - as if taking a 45rpm record and play it at 33rpm1, you would know that she was screeching:

It's as though she's already consumed an enormous sack of sugary candy.
Of course, I'm excited for Halloween every year2 - but this year Phillyist has been running a series called the 31 Days of Halloweeen - and in working on it I've become hyper aware of all the Halloween-related activity there is in my area; and simultaneously frustrated that I am physically incapable of doing all of it3. I have had one Halloween experience already (being a recent foray to Eastern State Penitentiary's haunted house) but my real Halloween celebration begins tomorrow night - when I will be helping to haunt a gorgeous old Portugese tall ship on the Delaware river4,5. (You may also spot me on said ship Saturday afternoon and Sunday night; the sea gods permitting.) Saturday night I'll be attending a friend's annual Halloween bash, which is always the highlight of my Halloween season (after hopefully squeezing in the Dracula Parade) - and eventually ending my costumed capering at Dracula's Ball6 Monday evening.
Then Nanowrimo begins Tuesday - so I suppose I had better get some sleep tonight; it may be last I have for a good, long time.

Ah, well, lack of sleep is exactly how I maintain my day-to-day ghoulish pallor anyway.
1 Yes, I'm painfully aware of what a reference that is.2 That Tim Curry song? Totally stuck in my head on infinite loop. I wonder if I can snag it from iTunes... 3 Things I am dissappointed to miss include curatorial talks on Dracula (although I've seen the notes on display before; the Rosenbach is my favorite local museum), mischief night festivities, and the Horror Road Show at the Keswick. 4 I don't want to give anything away, but I'm led to understand there will be some buckles well swashed up on deck...and all manner of creatures below.5 Also, I get to pirate for charity - how cool is that?6 My, but Philadelphia does seem to love Dracula.
